Olives
After more than 3,000 years of traditional varieties, new clones are improving the olive varieties and new hybrids the specie.

Our research-based company experimented with over 100 French, Italian, Spanish and Greek varieties in different climates, soils, using various pruning schemes, irrigation practices, chemical and sensorial oil analyses, vigor and disease evaluation, and the clones Arbequina I-18, Arbosana I-43, and Koroneiki I-38 were shown to be the best options for high density olive orchards.

These clones are designed to have high productivity, slow growth, a short non-bearing period, to be resistant to diseases, and to produce a top quality olive oil.

The olive plants are supplied in pots ready for planting. This product offers more flexibility and more efficient orchard establishment. Once the ground is ready and the irrigation system is installed, the grower can plant the orchard year round and also dramatically reduce the number of losses. These plants have a healthy and pathogen-free root system, so when they are planted the roots begin growing fast.

All our olive clones are certified and all of them come with a label and clone number.

ARBEQUINA CLONE I-18®
This variety owes its name to the region called Arbeca in Catalonia. It is believed that it was brought there during the Middle Ages from the Mediterranean island of Majorca, birthplace of the California padres.

These oils are highly valued in both the national and international markets for their excellent organoleptic qualities. Traditionally, a high percentage of these oils has been exported to other countries (especially Italy) to fortify other olive oils. In recent years, the Arbequina has been the most widely planted olive variety around the world and is spreading fast to different countries.

The popularity of this variety can be attributed to the good sensory characteristics of its virgin oils and also to its agricultural advantages. It is a highly productive rural tree that bears fruit quickly, and it is also compact, which allows one to plant the trees more densely. It adapts well to poor terrain and is resistant to cold. It is also self-fertile. Its fruits ripen in stages, are small, spherical, and appear in clusters.

The oils of this variety stand out as being fruity, sweet, with apple, green grass, and almond aromas.

The Arbequina clone I-18 possesses the following advantages relative to the standard variety:

  • Heavier initial bearing
  • Higher productivity (25% more production)
  • More uniform ripening
  • More upright habit (semi-erect)

This information has been supplied by the I.R.T.A. (Institute of Research and Agronomic Technologies).

Authentic, true to the name Arbequina I-18 trees always bear the following label. Don’t be fooled by imitations.

KORONEIKI CLONE I-38®
This clone is selected from a Greek variety originally cultivated on the plains, lower hillsides and coastal areas of Crete, where the climate is relatively warm. It adapts well in high-density orchards and comes into production early (second leaf). The fruit is very small, averaging only 1 to 2 grams. The yield is high and production is consistent year to year.

The oil quality is exceptionally good in that it expresses a sweet and fruity flavor. The April 1995 edition of Olivae (International Olive Oil Council magazine) calls this variety “among the best in the world”. This cultivar is suitable for early, premium oil.

ARBOSANA CLONE I-43®
This newly commercialized clone boasts low vigor and high productivity, lending it to this type of orchard design. It has an open growth habit compared to the Arbequina I-18. The harvest time is approximately two weeks after the arbequina variety.

The typical fructification of the Arbosana variety is in big clusters resembling grapes. Because of its good agronomic features, this clone is having great success in some areas such as Provence (France), and it is spreading very fast. The oil yield is high, 54.26% against dry material and 21-24% fresh weight. The oil of this clone is high in polyphenol content and low proportion in Linoleic acid; this makes it very stable, ideal to blend with other oils.

Its oil has a strong character and expresses fruity, fresh grass aromas with a slightly bitter and peppery finish.
